Bringing a newborn home is magical, but it can also be overwhelming.
When I was preparing for our baby, I realized something important: the goal wasn’t just to buy baby gear. The goal was to create a cozy, comforting environment for both baby and us as parents. A space where late night feedings felt calmer, diaper changes were easier, and everyday routines felt just a little more peaceful.
These are the items that truly helped create that cozy rhythm for us, even if some days were unpredictable. If I were building a registry again, these would absolutely make the list.

Cozy Newborn Essentials I Swear By:
A Hatch sound machine is one of the best investments you can make for sleep. It creates a consistent, calming sound environment that helps babies settle and stay asleep.
What I love most is that you can control it directly from your phone. You can adjust the brightness of the night light, change sounds, and even set schedules without walking into the room and risking waking the baby.
For cozy nurseries, this is a must. The soft glow paired with gentle white noise makes nighttime feedings feel calm instead of chaotic.
I’ll admit it, my husband originally gave me so much grief about putting a wipe warmer on the registry. He was convinced we didn’t need it.
But once we started using it, and compared diaper changes with warm wipes versus cold ones, he completely changed his tune. Our baby definitely appreciated the difference and diaper changes became a lot less dramatic.
These are one of those underrated newborn hacks. Disposable pee pads placed on top of the changing pad can save you a lot of laundry in those first few months.
Because trust me, you will get peed on. Probably more than once.
Instead of constantly washing changing pad covers, you can simply toss the pad and replace it. It’s a small thing that removes one more task from an already busy day.
Newborn congestion is surprisingly common, and when it happens, a nasal aspirator (often called the snot sucker) becomes your best friend.
It’s incredibly effective and works much better than the traditional bulb suction tools hospitals send you home with.
A Diaper Genie is a nonnegotiable in my opinion.
Newborn diapers add up quickly, and this system helps seal odors so your nursery doesn’t constantly smell like a diaper pail. Stock up on refill bags while you’re registering because you’ll definitely use them.
Electric Baby Nail Filer
Newborn nails are surprisingly sharp, but using clippers on a tiny baby can feel terrifying.
An electric baby nail trimmer solves that problem. It gently files their nails instead of clipping them, which makes it much safer and easier.
I used this well into toddlerhood before feeling comfortable switching to traditional clippers.
Swaddles can be a lifesaver for newborn sleep, but every baby seems to have their own preference.
I recommend registering for a few different swaddle styles. Through a little trial and error, you’ll quickly figure out which one your baby loves most.
The Boppy feeding pillow quickly became something we used every single day.
It supports baby during feeding and gives your arms a break during those long newborn sessions.
The best part is that you can switch out the covers to match your nursery style or just keep things fresh and clean.
A baby lounger is one of those items that creates a cozy little nest for your baby to relax in.
We used ours constantly (before he could roll over) for supervised naps or lounging in the living room. It’s incredibly helpful during those early months when babies love feeling snug and supported.
A humidifier is incredibly helpful during cold season or when baby is congested.
Adding moisture to the air can help babies breathe easier and sleep more comfortably.
You won't need one, until you do, and trust me, you will. Have this on hand before that time comes so you're ready.
Not all babies like the same pacifier, and some won't take them at all. That’s why a pacifier sampler pack is such a great registry item.
It lets you try multiple shapes and styles without committing to just one brand.
Instead of constantly boiling bottles or cluttering your counters, these tools keep everything clean, organized, and ready for the next feeding.
Having a dedicated space to dry your bottles is a must - and claim that counter space now while you can, before the craziness.
If there’s one item I would absolutely never compromise on, it’s the crib mattress.
A breathable baby mattress that is washable and designed with safety in mind can provide real peace of mind. Our Newton brand has been incredible and our child still sleeps on it today.
Knowing baby has a safe and comfortable sleep surface is worth every penny.
One of my favorite hacks was turning a rolling cart into a baby command center.
I stocked it with diapers, wipes, bottles, burp cloths, breastfeeding supplies, snacks, and water for myself. Sometimes you end up nap trapped while feeding or rocking baby, and having everything within reach makes life so much easier.
Now that the newborn stage is over, we’ve even repurposed the cart in our child’s room.
Other Things to Add to Your Baby Registry
Beyond those cozy essentials, there are a few basics you’ll want to include when building your registry.
Diapers: Skip stocking up on too many newborn sizes. Babies grow out of them incredibly fast. Instead, register for size 1 and size 2 diapers.
Wipes: You will go through wipes faster than you think. Having a large supply on hand is always helpful.
Onesies and Clothing: Focus on 0–3 month sizes and larger, since newborn clothes get outgrown quickly.
Linens: You’ll want extras of these because babies are messy.
Register for the basics like:
Burp cloths
Crib sheets
Changing pad covers
Baby Carrier or Wrap: Do your research on the different kinds out there - the easier to put baby in the better. See what works for you and your patience level!
Play Gym: A baby play gym is perfect for tummy time and early development. Many families keep one on each floor of the house.
Stroller: Choose a stroller that can grow with your baby, transitioning from infant stage to toddler years.
Car Seats: Register for two car seats if possible, one for each vehicle.
Baby Towels: Hooded baby towels are soft, adorable, and perfect for keeping baby warm after bath time.
The newborn stage can feel like a whirlwind, but the right items can truly make your home feel calmer and more comfortable during those early months.
My biggest advice is to focus on products that create ease, comfort, and a cozy environment for both you and baby. The little things, like warm wipes, soft lighting, and having everything within reach during late night feedings, can make a bigger difference than you might expect.
